At Dorset College our native English language teachers have successfully guided our student’s through the IELTS course to achieve the grade in the test they require for the Degree programme of their choice.  Many are now studying at institutes of Technology or Universities throughout Ireland.

This course is ideal for international students who wish to enter an Irish University, as it is the key test used to assess the applicants' English language abilities, for either undergraduate or postgraduate degree programmes.  It will provide students with a proven level of English for academic, work or career purposes.

As well as English language development and preparation which is so important for IELTS, the course also focuses on the academic skills and learning strategies that will enable students to participate successfully at undergraduate or postgraduate level programmes.

The small class sizes provide the opportunity for teachers to get to know each student individually and focus on their specific language needs.

The focus on improving levels of English through a General English programme in the morning and a specific academic English exam focus on IELTS (International English Language Testing System) in the afternoon.

Students preparing for the IELTS exam will be required to have a B1CEF (Common European Framework level) of English in order to prepare for the IELTS exam which is targeted at preparing students aiming for 4.5 - 6.5 scores.

This course will enable international students to develop their English Language competency, fluency, proficiency and accuracy through the general English programme and focus the students on exam techniques and strategies for improving their academic English skills in preparation of the exam in IELTS in the afternoon intensive class.

Lessons are held in multi-lingual and multi-cultural classrooms where various approached are employed by the highly experienced and qualified teachers who use different methods of teaching, although the approach is mostly communicative and task-based.

We offer classes at six internationally recognised levels as follows:

A1.1 (beginner) A1.2 (elementary) A2 (pre-intermediate) B1 (intermediate) B2 (upper-intermediate) C1 (advanced)

The intensive classes (IELTS) have a maximum of 8-10 people per class and students are given the opportunity to focus in more detail on any weaknesses such as grammar or skills, as well as a strong emphasis on communicative activities such as collaborative discussions, speaking games and pronunciation where fluency and accuracy are practiced in a smaller and more personal learning environment.

  • The individual band scores are then calculated to produce an overall band score.
  • Overall band scores are reported in whole and half bands.
  • Your language skills will be evaluated on a band score scale ranging from 0 (non-user) to 9 (expert user).
  • The IELTS Academic courses assesses whether a student is ready to study or train in the medium of English.
