This one year International Foundation in Engineering & IT Course will provide a direct pathway to an Irish university degree programme. International learners will acquire the foundation knowledge skills and competence required to successfully participate and embark on a degree programme alongside their Irish counterparts. This course will enable them to maximise their potential and make a successful transition to higher education engineering or technology degree programmes.

To achieve the General Studies Level 5 Major Award a credit value of 120 applies.
A combination of module appropriate assessment procedures will facilitate the assessment of learning outcomes of this course. These methods will include a combination of final written examinations and continuous assessment processes such as assignments, collection of work, learner records, projects and skills demonstration.

The Qualifications and Quality Assurance (Education and Training) Act 2012 Part 6 requires that all programmes of 3 months or more duration have in place arrangements for the Protection of Enrolled Learners to ensure learners have the opportunity to complete their programme of study. Dorset College has made arrangements with at least two other providers to comply with this legal obligation. The Foundation in Engineering & IT will provide international learners with the skills, knowledge, competence and qualifications for entry to undergraduate degree programmes in Universities and Institutes of Technology in Ireland.
Graduates who have successfully completed this programme will have the academic and professional skills to a level that will allow them to pursue Engineering & IT degrees and/or related degree programmes.
Learners will have a wide range of degree programmes to choose from and will be ready to take on the personal and academic challenges of higher education.

Doctor Graham Turner PhD, MSc, PgDip, B.A Mod is a geneticist and molecular biologist who studied at Trinity College Dublin. His research career has included time at Queen Mary University of London, the University of Indiana in Indianapolis and the Trinity Centre for Molecular Medicine, where he obtained his PhD in the study of the genetic basis of celiac disease. He has published papers in leading journals including Nature Genetics, BMC Medical Genetics, Gut and PLOS. He also spent some time as a Forensic Scientist, and the student services department of Carlow IT, where he was involved in providing support for disadvantaged and disabled students.
Graham has extensive experience in the teaching of scientific skills, and was the Coordinator of MSc in molecular medicine practical class from 2007-2009 in the Trinity Institute of Molecular Medicine, Saint James’ Hospital. He has lectured in Dorset College since 2011, and is currently lecturing in biology and chemistry.
Fergus Moore holds a B.A. in English Literature University College Dublin and a MSc. Dublin Institute of Technology. He is presently studying for a PhD. in Public Sector Management.
He is the programme leader for the Bachelor of Business at Dorset College and he lectures in Management, Communications and Marketing. Fergus has extensive Lecturing and teaching experience ranging from teaching dis-advantaged teenagers to lecturing at degree level. Fergus’ Industry experience includes independent management consultancy in Ireland, England and Australia in Financial IT systems consultancy and Project Management & Process Training. Interests and Activities include: enjoys reading and cinema.
Edel Freeman is a tutor of Personal and Professional Development, Team work and Research & Study skills in Dorset College, Edel uses her coaching skills and industry experience to facilitate the students learning across a range of subjects.
With over 20 years experience in medical devices, chemical and construction based industries working in quality management and learning and development roles. Established PTP Recruitment in 2007 with niche focus of placing professionals into part-time and contract roles in industry. As part of that business, Edel offers career coaching services to candidates as primarily highly qualified and experienced mothers looking for a change of career or returning to work. She provides maternity coaching services to private clients and organisations keen to offer support to their high achieving female executives prior to and on return to work after maternity leave.
Colm Cunneen (B.A / M.A.) is an English teacher with over seven years experience and five years experience teaching IELTS classes at Dorset College. Colm has a wide range of teaching experience teaching communications, child psychology and on psychotherapy courses. He values a skills approach to the IELTS exam where students learn how to do each part of the exam so they can get the best possible score with their level of English. Colm works with each students individual language problems to help them to reach and go beyond their expectations.
He has taught students from a wide range of nationalities such as Oman, Brazil, France and Saudi Arabia. This has helped him to hone in on the specific language problems of each nationality in order to help students to improve. Colm has also taught English teachers in Spain how to teach English in a more communicative way. This experience allowed him to increase his awareness of teachers and students needs which has strengthened his focused approach to the IELTS preparation and English language teaching.
