The Postgraduate Teacher Training Course in English as A Foreign Language is accredited by ACELS (The Advisory Council for English Language Teaching in ), the national quality assurance body for ELT in , under the auspices of the Department of Education & Science and is required to work in English Language schools that meet the standards required by ACELS. In addition it is a passport to a teaching career internationally.

CELT (Certificate in English Language Teaching) is now what was formerly known as the initial TEFL Certificate. The course is a preparatory course designed to give participants the knowledge and skills to teach English as a foreign language in a competent, professional and dynamic manner. It enables those who wish to pursue a teaching career at home or abroad to gain a recognised qualification. It permits the participants to acquire the initial confidence to be able to teach this specialised subject area in a supportive environment with highly qualified and experienced professionals.

Pre-requisites
Candidates must hold a HETAC Level 7 qualification (equivalent to an ordinary degree) in order to obtain the ACELS Certification. Candidates who do not hold a HETAC Level 7 qualification can undertake the course, but will receive a Dorset College Certificate only. In the case of candidates who are non-native speakers, proof of proficiency will be required. IELTS band 8+ or above or TOEFL exam paper test 650/computer test 280 or CPE.  Non-native candidates, who do not have such proof, will undergo a formal oral and written aptitude test.

Course Aim
The main aim of this course is to help participants become highly trained EFL teachers who, on completion of the course, will be effective EFL teachers at any level from beginner to advanced, in multilingual or monolingual classes; to be able to gain and hold employment in prestigious English language schools, both here in and across the globe. 

Principal Areas of Study
The Dorset College CELT course is intensive and comprehensive. Among the important areas covered are: A History of ELT Methods, Teaching Vocabulary, Lesson Planning, Methodology, Language Awareness, Learners & Levels, Classroom Management, Materials Evaluation, Microteaching (Peer Teaching), Teaching Writing, Monitoring Learners, Teaching Grammar, Error Correction, Using Songs & Games,  ESP (English for Specific Purposes, Teaching Young Learners, Business English, CPD in ELT, Using Visuals & Audiovisual Aids, Evaluation & Assessment in ELT, Career Options in ELT (inside and outside ).

On this 120+ hour teacher-training course, you will receive at least 360 minutes teaching practice within the school. 100% attendance at your teaching practice sessions is a mandatory requirement. For the rest of the course, 100% attendance is recommended and 90% is compulsory. After every Teaching Practice session, all trainees will be given both oral and written feedback on their efforts

In terms of class observations, you will be given the chance to observe a minimum of 6 hours of classes, at a variety of levels, taught by members of our experienced and professional teaching team.  A major part of the overall course is the trainee Portfolio, which is a record of your work during this teacher-training course and clearly shows what you have learnt and indicates how much you have developed as a teacher. The Portfolio contains your homework, lesson plans, assignments and so on.

Award Title:
The ACELS accredited CELT (Certificate in English Language Teaching), as run by Dorset College , is a 10-week, 120+ hour course. As an ACELS approved centre for this teacher-training course, we provide excellent pre-service training for candidates who wish to enter the EFL profession.  Successful participants will be awarded a CELT certificate by ACELS (The Advisory Council for English Language Teaching in ).
